Since it looks like it's going to be a few day of rain, I thought I'd pass on my listening recommendations for rainy days. My all-time number one rainy day album is Charles Mingus's The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady. It's on several of my all-time lists, but it tops without any real challenger in sight the rainy day list. It's got the feeling of an old pair of shoes and a comfortable jacket that wrap around you in the night. The feeling of timelessness and experience that goes beyond your years. The taste of smoke and sweat, of love and loss. Very very few albums pierce into you all the way from the first note until the last. Sometimes you feel like the sinner lady standing humbled in front of the saint. And in some ways you are, a modern penitent surrounded in the preserved genius of Charles Mingus.
Today's choice, however, was a little random. I-tunes pulled me in to listen to lambchop, and it was definitely the right choice. Started with damaged and then ended up letting it continue to a couple other albums. Oddly, his music actually seemed happier with the rainy day - sort of like a good couple. Individually maybe neither was hugely memorable, but together they achieve a beautiful synergy. What are your rainy-day favs? It looks like we have a few more days of this to go. Until then, relax with a bottle of wine, dim the lights a little and turn on some Mingus.

Black Saint...one of my favorites for many a year. If you like that phase of Mingus, you'll love "Let My Children Hear Music". Yes.
